New date set for World Record ATV Parade in Quartzsite

By Cate Mueller

A giant catfish with saddle bags adorns an ATV in the 2006 parade.

Saturday, February 10, is the new date for the Willpower Incorporated Largest ATV Parade word record attempt in Quartzsite, Arizona.

Willpower Director Alex Taft said the change was necessary to accommodate ATV riders who compete in the Parker 425 off-road race and also want to ride in a world record parade.

“As it turns out, the change is really for the better. The fire department is having their pancake breakfast February 10th, and the Rotary Club will sell food in the park after the parade,” said Taft.

Parade line up is at 8 a.m. at the Quartzsite Fire Station on Tyson Street, just east of Highway 95. Come early, the pancake breakfast starts at 7 a.m.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will proceed east on Tyson, south on Plymouth, east on Quail Trail, south on Las Palomas, west on Coyote Street, north on Plymouth, and then west on Quail Trail to end at Quartzsite Town Park ball field, where the Quartzsite Rotary Club plans to sell hot dogs, sodas and water.

There will be contests for most original riders and a raffle after the parade. Special souvenir T shirts will be on sale soon.

ATV riders, sign up now to help Quartzsite break the record. Call 928-916-0657 or e-mail info@willpowerinc.org . Parade entry forms are at the Quartzsite Public Library, the Quartzsite Improvement Association, both chambers of commerce and on line; go to www.willpowerinc.org/atvparade.htm .

Rules: Entry fee donation is $10 per rider; one rider per ATV unless the vehicle is designed to carry two, and unlicensed ATVs should be delivered to the Fire Station to participate. Call for details, 928-916-0657.

Willpower Incorporated is a non-profit organization created to support culture — fine arts, education and the humanities — for children, adults and seniors; and to support prevention of cruelty to children and animals. Projects include QAC, the planned Quartzsite Activities Center, and Paw Power animal sanctuary.

Quartzsite has a new thrift store open on Main Street in Patty’s RV Park, across from Beall’s Outlet. Owner Leigh Simmons donates the proceeds to help raise funds for Quartzsite’s planned animal shelter.

“I have always felt passionate about animals,” said Simmons. “The Animal Refuge Thrift Shop is a way for us to donate right here at home.”

Shopping is fun; the store is busy and merchandise changes daily. Simmons keeps her shop stocked with top quality goods, including furniture, men’s and ladies clothing, antiques, books, videos, and jewelry -- from fine to funky. Donations are welcome.

Willpower Incorporated, a non-profit organization, is the force behind the animal shelter and also the proposed Quartzsite Activities Center (QAC) and swimming pool. Willpower’s goals include supporting culture – the humanities, education and fine arts – for children, adults and seniors; and to support prevention of cruelty to children and animals.

Animal adoption, public education and spay/neuter programs are part of the planned shelter activities.

“I also want to bring in some of the animals and have a pet-of-the-week in the shop. That way you can actually see the life you save,” Simmons said.

The Animal Refuge Thrift Shop is at 455 E. Main Street in Quartzsite, AZ. Hours are generally Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Phone (928) 927-4223 or (951) 764-6072 for information or to arrange donations to Animal Refuge Thrift Shop.

We need homes!

By Cate Mueller

Tiger kitty needs a new home. This medium-large dog needs a new home. She's a good watch dog. Sassy needs a new home. She's a great mouser.

Would you like a new furry friend? Here are three pets who need new homes: Tiger, left, is a domestic short haired indoor-outdoor cat with a shiny brindle coat. Birdie is a shepherd mix, about 7 years old, who likes to play. She is a good watch dog. Sassy, right, is a domestic long haired cat and an excellent mouser. All three pets are spayed, but will need to have current vaccinations. Cate Mueller photos

BLYTHE, CA -- A Colorado River Estates resident can no longer care for her three pets and needs to find them new homes. Cathy Gabele lives near Blythe, California, with two cats and a dog she adopted from her sister after she passed away. Now Cathy faces some challenges of her own and wants to be sure her pets get the love they deserve.

Tiger is a spayed domestic short-hair calico cat with a shiny dark brindle coat. She enjoys running and playing in the yard. She is litter box trained but will need her vaccinations brought up to date. Tiger would be happiest with an adult family.

Sassy is an unusual orange domestic long-hair cat. She had one litter and is now spayed. Sassy loves attention, especially brushing and petting, and might make a good therapy pet. She is litter box trained, good with children and an excellent mouse-catcher.

Birdie is a medium-large shepherd (and spaniel?) mix. She is a great watchdog and very obedient. Birdie is spayed, housebroken and loves biscuits!

Cathy estimates each of these animals are five to eight years old.

Please call Willpower at (928) 916-0657 as soon as possible if you have any room for a new furry friend. Or, two. Or, three!
